Move-In

Parents

South Florida families heading to college move-in should plan for the weather gap, decide early whether to ship or drive, work backward from move-in day with a simple timeline and bring a little bit of home along. Here’s our guide for Broward and Palm Beach families, whether your student is staying in Florida or heading north.

Weather

How should South Florida students plan for a different climate?

If your student is heading north, plan for real winter: a warm coat, waterproof boots, layers and bedding that can handle colder nights. If they’re staying in Florida, think heat and humidity: a good fan, breathable bedding and rain gear. August move-ins also fall during hurricane season, so it’s worth reading the school’s severe-weather guidance before you go.

Logistics

Should you ship dorm supplies or drive them?

For far-away schools, ordering online for in-store pickup near campus, or shipping to campus where the school allows packages, saves a packed car and a lot of stress. Check the school’s mail and package policies and delivery dates first. Driving? Pack by zone (bed, bath, desk, closet) so unpacking goes fast.

Timeline

What does a college move-in timeline look like?

Dorm Starter Kit: Coastal Cowboy mood board with Howdy pillow, cowboy boots and jute rug
  1. Spring: Commit, celebrate (bed party, anyone?) and submit housing forms.
  2. Early summer: Get the room assignment, connect with the roommate and gather room details.
  3. Mid-summer: Design the room and build the shopping list.
  4. Two to three weeks out: Place orders, schedule pickups or shipping and pack.
  5. Move-in day: Arrive early, make the bed first and unpack by zone.

Home

How do you bring a little South Florida to the dorm?

Tennis-themed dorm photo wall with striped wallpaper, a vintage racket and framed family photos

A few hometown touches go a long way: framed photos from home, a palm print or a beachy throw. Our Palm Beach Blush look is all soft pinks, breezy palms and crisp green-trim bedding, a little Palm Beach polish wherever they end up.

Move-in day

What should you bring on move-in day?

  • A tape measure, scissors and a small tool kit
  • Removable adhesive hooks and strips
  • Cleaning wipes for a quick wipe-down
  • Snacks and plenty of water
  • Patience (and an ice-cold Diet Coke)
