Packing List

Dorm Life

The essentials for a college dorm packing list are twin XL bedding, shower and bath supplies, under-bed storage, a desk lamp and power, laundry supplies, a basic first-aid kit and a few décor pieces that make the room feel like home. Below is our complete, room-by-room list, plus what to check before you buy anything.

Before you shop

What should you check before buying dorm supplies?

Dorm design session flat lay with fabric swatches, a mood board, a floor plan sketch and a tape measure
  • Your school’s housing list. Every campus publishes what’s allowed and what isn’t. Read it first.
  • Room details. Find out the bed size (most dorms use twin XL), whether beds can be raised and roughly how much space you’ll have.
  • Your roommate’s plans. Coordinate the big shared items, like a mini fridge or rug, so you don’t bring two.

Skip it

What should you not bring to a dorm?

Many campuses prohibit items like candles, incense, space heaters and certain extension cords or cooking appliances. Rules vary by school, so check your housing list before you pack. When in doubt, leave it home and buy it later if you really need it.
